The Fireside Chat

Fireside Chat April 13, 2015

"I'll Take Him" performed on piano
Matthew 27: 57-60

Artist Statement:

I finished practicing the song with the newly written lyrics one last time in the HFAC before walking over to the Nelke at 6:30. My heart was pumping, my stomach was scrunching, and I knew it was time to perform. I loved seeing all of my other classmates there visiting with each other and discussing what we would be doing as pizza and Oreos were being pounded down. The fireside chat was about to begin and that's when I started to ponder about this whole process of completing this song "I'll Take Him".

What was special about this process is that my brother, father, and mother were involved in the researching and creative process. Since my mission, I knew I wanted to write a song about Joseph's story of how he pleaded with Pilate for the Savior's body after His crucifixion. I thought that his perspective is interesting and not many people have written or created much art regarding his story. So, I sat down at the piano two weeks ago and started to come up with a chord progression that sounded appropriate with the type of style I wanted. I shared it with my family and received effective feedback. I was asking them questions such as, was Joseph there on the hill of Calvary during the crucifixion or did he go to Pilate after. I researched more about him and my mother and father shared with me some more scriptures that would help me. I love how this opportunity to write this song gave my family an opportunity to even study together about the Atonement and Joseph's involvement. My brother is a musician and he helped me with some words and making sure there was a bridge in the song. We will have this song to share for the rest of our lives.

I felt like the performance went well. I am glad that I was able to share my thoughts if I were to speak with Joseph and what questions I would ask him. Listening to the other performances and speeches helped broaden my horizon and reminded me to listen more to others and to remember how much of an impact the media and art have on society. I am thankful that this was the opportunity for me to collaborate with my family and write this song.
