Artist Statement:

Is there a difference between ADD and ADHD? Yes, they have similar symptoms but a different diagnosis. What are the symptoms like and they do they affect the person? I have met friends who have ADD. They are great examples to me because they work hard in their endeavors while having a great attitude towards the future. In researching more about Attention Deficit Order, there is much better treatment now than there was in the past.

Dictionary.com defines Attention Deficit Order as any of a range of behavioral disorders occurring primarily in children, including such symptoms as poor concentration, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. This disorder involves the physiology of the brain and his or hers environment. Now, in an article "Mental Disorder" by Andrew C.P. Sims, M.D. shares that now patients are able to receive better access to treatment. He states, "Mental disorders, in particular their consequences and their treatment, are of more concern and receive more attention now than in the past" (Brittanica Encyclopedia). Medicine has improved over the past centuries due to improvement with technology and research. Patients with ADD benefit from this higher awareness and access to treatment.

With creating my Twinery, I wanted to zone in on one character who has ADD but has not been diagnosed with it yet. I have spoken with my roommate who had ADD and he shared a great perspective with me. My character has similar qualities and traits like my roommate. In the game, the parents of the character are supportive and loving. There is also another character introduced if you choose to play XBOX live. He is one his friends and I wanted to share that many friends of people who have ADD are willing to help and understand. Later in the story there is an option to choose where the main character will do a self evaluation online about his symptoms. I included this option because there is an online symptoms checklist that has received great feedback from participants. The website is run by the Center of Maryland and clearly states that is a symptoms checklist not a diagnostic test. They recommend that after completing the checklist if you feel that your symptoms are very similar then to contact medical professionals. In the game, that is exactly what my character decides to do.

The medium of this game through Twinery invites the player to really dive into the world of the character. The player can't move on with the story if he doesn't click on which option he thinks he would choose. It helps brings awareness of certain social issues or illnesses to a wide demographic. After completing these games or twines, the creator of the game would hope that the player would reflect on his or her gaming experience; that hopefully this helped educate the player as well. The purpose to create these games are insightful and fulfilling.
