The Fireside Chat

Fireside Chat April 13, 2015   "I'll Take Him" performed on piano Matthew 27: 57-60 Artist Statement:      I finished practicing the song with the newly written lyrics one last time in the HFAC before walking over to the Nelke at 6:30. My heart was pumping, my stomach was scrunching, and I knew it was time to perform. I loved seeing all of my other classmates there visiting with each other and discussing what we would be doing as pizza and Oreos were being pounded down. The fireside chat was about to begin and that's when I started to ponder about this whole process of completing this song "I'll Take Him".      What was special about this process is that my brother, father, and mother were involved in the researching and creative process. Since my mission, I knew I wanted to write a song about Joseph's story of how he pleaded with Pilate for the Savior's body after His crucifixion. I thought that his perspective is interesting and not ma...

Twinery: Hyperfocus

My link to my awareness video game named Hyperfocus : (copy and paste it in your URL) http://www.philome.la/cam_babcock/hyperfocus Artist Statement:    Is there a difference between ADD and ADHD? Yes, they have similar symptoms but a different diagnosis. What are the symptoms like and they do they affect the person? I have met friends who have ADD. They are great examples to me because they work hard in their endeavors while having a great attitude towards the future. In researching more about Attention Deficit Order, there is much better treatment now than there was in the past.     Dictionary.com defines Attention Deficit Order as  any of a range of behavioral disorders occurring primarily in children, including such symptoms as poor concentration, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. This disorder involves the physiology of the brain and his or hers environment. Now, in an article "Mental Disorder" by Andrew C.P. Sims, M.D. shares that now pat...

Welcome to Dinosty!

Artist Statement:   Bleecker’s statement that “one can do science fiction not only as a writer of stories but also as a maker of things” is exactly what we did for this project. We didn't create a science fiction narrative in which there is an exposition, climax, and resolution. Instead, we created a kind of narrative by making artifacts from a world that doesn't exist. These artifacts reflect a society that exists in a world in which dinosaurs never went extinct. They are, in fact “totems through which a larger story can be told, or imagined, or expressed.” This is essentially the process that James Gurney went through to write his  Dinotopia  series. These books tell the story of people who live with sentient dinosaurs. This idea came to him while working with  National Geographic  archaeologists to envision ancient cities. Gurney used, among other techniques, both photographs of costumed people and maquettes (or scale models) to create elements of his...

Webspinna Battle 70's vs. 90's (Generations Meet Head to Head)

Webspinna Battle with Michelle Gioglio     Pokemon, boy bands, and Nickelodeon sums up my childhood from the 90's. I loved growing up in the 90's. I feel like my generation had the best kid shows growing up and yes I am bias to this opinion. I thought my generation would destroy Michelle's generation, the 70's. However, the thing that was destroyed was my ignorance. The ignorance I had to many of the things that were created or popular in the 70's was washed away when Michelle and I joined together in creating our sound bite lists. I knew of the classic Bee Gee's, Jackson 5, and Saturday Night Fever, but I wasn't aware of many other great influential things.      I loved the collaboration process with Michelle. We met together in her apartment and sat down with our laptops and YouTubed away for the sound bites that we desired. Next thing I knew, we were laughing together and sharing stories of our childhood and what art had an impact on us. I felt like t...

Genesis Before Me

TEXTUAL POACHING  My mash up representation: Genesis to Babcock Genesis to Babcock1 - 3:9:15, 9.07 PM 1:56      Who am I? What's my identity? I started to brainstorm and write down all that was coming to mind on my notebook: son, brother, English, drummer, singer, piano player. I was seeing all of those together and one of my favorite musician/singer songwriter came to mind: Phil Collins. Phil Collins is an English man, drummer, son, singer, and piano player. Before Phil Collins began his solo career, he was involved with the band called Genesis. Genesis was a very successful band that introduced Phil Collins to the world. So, I decided to choose three songs by them that was created before I was born. The three songs are "Throwing it All Away", "Man on the Corner", and "Follow You and Follow Me". This mash up presents the band's talents and also their origin.       In reference to the reading, I think about what the text...

What to Wear?

Medium Specificity T-Shirts are at the bottom of the page      The choice to be able to use any medium we desire is a thrill. I was sitting back in my school chair pondering all of the mediums that were coming to mind, film, painting, photography, maybe even interpretive dance. Then, the idea came to me like a fireball hitting Mt. Doom. I would make my own t-shirt. The medium that contains cotton and ink. Now as I was struck with that idea I overheard Dhane Taylor, a student from my TMA 112 class, speaking with a friend telling her that he was going to make a shirt. I thought he must have been hit with same fireball. Well if we were both targeted and hit, then we should collaborate and make TWO t-shirts. We collaborated and we decided to make one t-shirt, my t-shirt, say, "Since when did this (a picture of a man with a mustache) become more attractive than...". His t-shirt says, "This (with a picture of a man who has a beard). Here at BYU, there are many men who hav...

Historical Script

Link to script: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B80aLZbp6f8bM1JCU3VxTE1jMTg/view?usp=sharing THE STORY OF THE SMALL BEAD IN THE MATTHEWS FAMILY The family journal of Ben Matthews has been passed down from many generations. Beth Babcock, the aunt of Cameron Babcock, gained a copy of the journal from her mother and has kept it for many years. In studying and researching the life of Ben Matthews, the story of his daughter getting smallpox from a bead caught our interest. The Matthews family was a living and breathing family that traveled west to Utah all they way from Mississippi. They had much faith in God and wanted to show that faith in their actions. However along the way, one of the daughters found a small bead along the trail. She kept it with her on the trek which introduced smallpox to the family and to other pioneer families. This story contains many internal and external conflicts such as the test of diligence on the trek and dealing with sickness. While researching...

Process Piece

Process Piece of Garret Helgesen and Cameron Babcock Trip to Sundance Audio Artist Statement:      As we discussed ideas for the Process Piece, we thought: What process should we record using audio? What are we doing this weekend? I am going to Sundance. So am I. Well, lets record us making the trip to Sundance. We decided to record the trip starting with us walking to the car all the way to us leaving Sundance. The process was eye opening and the product captures the ambient sounds at the Sundance Festival.       Regarding the process, there were many interesting things that I never have paid attention to in traveling to a destination like Sundance. Traveling by car accompanies many sounds like the car door sound opening, the engine rolling, the radio playing, and the sounds from friends enjoying the time. By pushing record on the mic, my awareness was heightened specifically to all of the footsteps around us and sounds of a car full of frien...
