Children's Media Play

Let's Play

Playing is such a big part of my childhood and hopefully it is for all children. When I was a kid, I played baseball starting at age 5. I loved it. My older siblings played baseball too so we would play catch all of the time. I loved my teammates on the field. I learned about the importance of unity in a team and that hard work can pay off. I think practice can also be play if you enjoy that activity.

I loved our discussion in class about play. What kept coming to mind was the tools we use for play. For baseball, it's a glove, ball, and a baseball bat for the main tools. Maybe the tool or weapon is a sword, lightsaber, or even just a stick. Imagination can come right into play time because the stick can turn into the magic sword that will slay the dragon. I think it's important to remember that play is play though meaning when one child plays dead; he is really not dead. When mom yells out to the kids to come in, the kids come back to life and run inside. Children do need to understand that in real life is someone is shot five times that generally means they are dead.

During the play time in class, I mainly played Mario Kart. I love playing Mario Kart. I played it a lot on the 64 when I was a kid and on the Wii with my brother. I love how inviting it is and entertaining it is for multiplayers. It is so fun to laugh of how someone has been in first for the whole race until the end because they got hit with a blue turtle shell. Star power equals immortality. I think the Nintendo does a great job with having fun games for many players that are appropriate for all ages.

As adults, it is still important that we have play time. A time where we can relax and get a break from work or the stresses of life. I love how with play time there can be subconscious idea that during play time I will have fun and it's a time where I don't have to worry about everything. Many relationships can be strengthened during play time. While people play, there can be conversations that help people remember that they are important and they are valued.
