Children's Media: Critique
Critique and Speed Racer
How much weight does a child's voice have in today's world? Has that weight changed? Considering Munro (1961), the child's voice is not heard by adults and no one even notices that this little child is in war. I feel that in today's society a child's voice has more weight than it did fifty years ago. I feel in news all over the world we have heard stories and voices of small children trying to navigate through problems or issues in the world.
Regarding Speed Racer (2008), young Speed only wants to be a race car driver and be like his older brother. The viewer sees during the exposition of the film while Speed is in elementary school he doesn't care about his school work at and doodles on his test. At least the teacher does notice and it is brought up to his parents. Speed's parents are aware of his work ethic towards school but they also know that they run their family racing business. In this film, I didn't feel that a child wasn't fully being heard. The viewer notices that Speed's wants become his reality throughout the film.
The production design is all in unison for the film, Speed Racer. The saturated reds and blues, the wardrobe, and the visual effects for the races all support the child, nostalgic feel that the viewer is seeing the 1985's Speed Racer comic book come to life. The audience feels that they are sitting right next to the family, watching Speed do his thing. The immersive world that the filmmakers built for the viewer helps one understand what this world is like and how important racing is to not only the community but the world. There is a conflict of the why to racing which helps children understand the desires behind hobbies or careers. Does one only do it for the money or does one do it because they are "driven" like Speed Racer?
The film is very entertaining; the film is like The Fast and The Furious meets a very colorful 80's video game. The family relationships that are presented support how a family can lean on each other and support one another with their dreams. Even though the question of Rex being or not being Racer X tickles your brain and attention span throughout the film, Speed Racer travels through children's media with flying colors.
