Genesis Before Me
TEXTUAL POACHING
My mash up representation:

Who am I? What's my identity? I started to brainstorm and write down all that was coming to mind on my notebook: son, brother, English, drummer, singer, piano player. I was seeing all of those together and one of my favorite musician/singer songwriter came to mind: Phil Collins. Phil Collins is an English man, drummer, son, singer, and piano player. Before Phil Collins began his solo career, he was involved with the band called Genesis. Genesis was a very successful band that introduced Phil Collins to the world. So, I decided to choose three songs by them that was created before I was born. The three songs are "Throwing it All Away", "Man on the Corner", and "Follow You and Follow Me". This mash up presents the band's talents and also their origin.
In reference to the reading, I think about what the text was saying about the viewers of television. So many viewers "watch" tv. Some of the time the tv will be playing in people's homes however no one specifically is sitting down watching one specific show. Tv has so many textual poaching occurring. Let's say that the writer's brick wall of tv is very large. Writers of television are influenced and inspired by all of the texts that have come before them. So many tv shows even have dialogue that is the same of other texts from movies or shows that have come before them.
I decided to do this Genesis mash up because it represents my identity through the involvement of Phil Collins and also even in the instrumentation. In each song, there are drums and a piano playing throughout the songs. I faded in the oohs and aahs from "Throwing it all Away" on top of "Man on the Corner". I thought the juxtaposition of those two was very interesting because the emotions of the song are very different. "Throwing it all Away" is upbeat and "Man on the Corner" has a slower tempo. I believe this helps identify me as well because I love to sing even out loud to help me feel better and to remember to have eternal perspective. My roommates know that I'd be singing oohs and aahs during the good times and difficult times. I began drumming when I was 12 years old and Phil Collins had a huge influence on me when I was beginning to learn the basics of drumming. This mash up reminds of Boyce Avenue's mash up of three Justin Timberlake songs. It mashes up "Dead and Gone", "Rehab", and "What's Goes Around". These songs are all of from the same artist like my mash up. I think by having a mash up that is only from one artist, the audience is able to understand more of the style of the artist and if they are well rounded or not.
Creating art is a powerful tool that we can use to help people understand where we come from and who we are. The ideas and desire we have can be represented in our art implicitly or explicitly. My goal that I wrote down in my notes from last lecture is to keep reading, learning, and creating my brick wall of influences. I am pleased to say and tell people of where I cam from. I am pleased to be an English drummer, singer, songwriter, and musician.
