Webspinna Battle 70's vs. 90's (Generations Meet Head to Head)

Webspinna Battle with Michelle Gioglio

Pokemon, boy bands, and Nickelodeon sums up my childhood from the 90's. I loved growing up in the 90's. I feel like my generation had the best kid shows growing up and yes I am bias to this opinion. I thought my generation would destroy Michelle's generation, the 70's. However, the thing that was destroyed was my ignorance. The ignorance I had to many of the things that were created or popular in the 70's was washed away when Michelle and I joined together in creating our sound bite lists. I knew of the classic Bee Gee's, Jackson 5, and Saturday Night Fever, but I wasn't aware of many other great influential things.

I loved the collaboration process with Michelle. We met together in her apartment and sat down with our laptops and YouTubed away for the sound bites that we desired. Next thing I knew, we were laughing together and sharing stories of our childhood and what art had an impact on us. I felt like this project built upon our friendship and our understanding of each others generations.

In reference to another work of art, during the most recent Grammy Awards, a mash up was performed in front of millions. Mash ups of songs from generation to generation or in the same generation, the general audience can have a higher ability to relate to the songs. There is a stronger variety to the song. Also, there is a new artistry in uniting two songs together. The artist, Hozier and Annie Lennox, did a mash up of "Take Me to Church" and "I Put a Spell on You". The audience was screaming at the top of their lungs when the lyrics changed to the other song from "Take Me to Church". What is very unique with mash ups, the audience is not exactly sure when the next song will come and in what way it will be performed. For example, when we were playing our sound bites, the audience didn't know if I was going to play the theme from FRIENDS next or if Michelle was going to play the theme song to The Dukes of Hazard. The audience didn't know the duration of the clips as well which kept them intrigued in the sounds and the performance if the beat wasn't dropped.

In reference to the reading, Jonathan Lethem’s “The Ecstasy of Influence” addresses the fine line of influence and copyright infringement.  Lethem states, “The world is a home littered with pop-culture products and their emblems...I’m not alone in having been born backward into an incoherent realm of texts, products, and images, the commercial and cultural environment…I can no more claim it as ‘mine’ than the sidewalks and forests of the world, yet I do dwell in it…”  The process we went
through to form our Webspinna Battle involved the commercial and cultural environment in which we were raised, lost memories from our childhoods which stand as a testimony to other generations. When we chose the Battle topic of “generations,” we settled upon the decades in which we were each born to represent ourselves, which in turns demonstrates the influences upon our minds when they were young and impressionable.  Although we dwell in these pop-culture products and their emblems of our younger years because we’ve given them meaning, we can’t claim them as ours; we share them with others who grew up during that time, who also assigned meaning to them and were likewise influenced by them.

The Webspinna battle was a huge success. I learned how the impact of the songs or sounds have will change or be influenced by the way they are juxtaposed next to other sounds. The audience produced the visuals in their minds when the sounds penetrate their ears which is unique to the medium. In the upcoming years if I am notified of when the next Webspinna battle is going to be, I will be there.
